The English poet and art theorist Herbert Read was born in North Yorkshire and after serving in the First World War he became an influential art critic, author, anarchist and co-founder of the ICA in London. This new film is an immersive portrayal of his life and work, reflecting on how his ideas can be applied to contemporary society today. Interviews with artists, curators, historians and peers are combined with archival material, poetry and scenes of the Yorkshire landscape.
After the screening there will be a discussion with filmmaker Huw Wahl, sound designer Simon Connor, Herbert Read’s son Benedict Read and lecturer and writer Dr Michael Paraskos.
