Prof. James Fitzmaurice (University of Sheffield, UK)

Following on from the success of our previous gatherings in Cyprus of international academics and research students looking at early modern women writers (c. 1500 to c.1750) we are pleased to announce the call for papers for the Fourth Annual Early Modern Women Writers' Colloquium in Cyprus.

As in previous years we will again be teaming up with the annual Othello's Island Conference on Medieval and Early Modern Studies to share facilities and hold collaborative social events during the colloquium, but the focus of the colloquium remains early modern women writers, in any language, active between the early sixteenth century and the eighteenth century in any part or the world.

We welcome papers lasting up to twenty minutes on more well-known figures such as Margaret Cavendish, Aphra Behn and Mary Wroth, but also work on lesser-known women writers of the period. Papers looking at the reception and social context of early modern women writers are also welcomed, as well as on the subsequent legacy of early modern women writers in later periods.

'Wild card' papers, which cover related areas, but do not easily fit into any of the suggested categorisations will also be considered, but please remember the focus of the colloquium is early modern women writers.

As in previous years, the popular round-table discussion, chaired by Professor James Fitzmaurice of the University of Sheffield, and Dr Stella Achilleos of the University of Cyprus will be part of the event, looking at developing themes in the study of early modern women writers, and the teaching of the subject in schools, colleges and universities. Hopefully, the weather will again be kind to us in Cyprus, and we will again be able to hold this outside under the trees at CVAR!

Our hosts for the colloquium, the Centre for Visual Arts and Research (CVAR), is located in the centre of the old town of Nicosia, capital of Cyprus. In its medieval streets, surrounded by the huge Venetian walls, you will find lovely museums, shops, cafes and restaurants, as well as medieval and renaissance buildings, harking back to the medieval and renaissance period, when Cyprus was ruled by the French Lusignan royal family. Perhaps most notable of the house was the last Queen of Cyprus, Catherine Cornaro, whose portrait was painted by Giorgione, Titian and other Renaissance artists.

As in previous years, by sharing the CVAR facilities with the simultaneous Othello's Island Conference on Medieval, Renaissance and Early Modern Studies, delegates attending the Fourth Annual Early Modern Women Writers' Colloquium will also have the opportunity to attend its conference talks and other events, including a special coach trip to see the medieval and renaissance city of Famagusta on 9 April.
